[ what the hell. the smile on her face twists into a confused frown. ]

Jaune? What did you do to your hair?

[He brightens up when he sees Yukari, but looks confused at her reaction.]

Huh? Oh! That's right I've gotten a haircut since you last saw me.

I decided my hair was getting into my face too much and decided to get it cut. What do you think?

[ she finds herself at a crossroads.

yukari takeba, popular and successful model, wants to ask for the name of the barber so she can personally ask what the hell were they thinking when they touched jaune's hair and let him walk out of their business with that haircut.

yukari takeba, supportive and caring friend, wants to reassure jaune that it looks.... well, it's not terrible. honestly, the short look works for him. it's just that--well.

she takes a deep breath and gives his new look another once over before she responds, ] I think the sides look fine, but you are not allowed to cut any more off the top for the next four months. Like, at all.

Huh?

[That wasn't what he was expecting. No one had brought up his hair before really let alone criticized him for it.]

Does it really look that bad?

[He lifts a hand to feel the spikes.]

It's not bad, just...different? Really different. [ yukari purses her lips in thought. ] Maybe it's the spikes, but then again it might be that I need time to get used to it.

Haircut or not, [ she gives him a genuine smile, ] it's really good to see you. It was a long month without you.

I guess it's pretty different.

[His smile returns as soon as she smiles at him.]

Yeah it's good to see you too. It's... been a long month for me too.

[Part of him was glad to know Yukari missed him.]

I'll tell you about it when we can sit down. It's kind of a long story.

[ of course she missed him. they're friends as much as yukari has a difficult time saying that out loud. ]

Then let's stop standing around out here and grab something to eat. Sounds like we've both got a lot to catch up on.

[ one packed queue later, they're seated in a quiet booth in the corner with trays of food in hand. don't mind if yukari just starts going to town on her mountain of fries. ]

How was home? It sounded like it was as peaceful as it could be.

I mean if you call stealing an airship peaceful...

[Which is what he'd been doing last time, but he supposes it at least wasn't actively dangerous.]

It... was good at first. We made it into Atlas and even met up with the General we needed to meet. Atlas is a really technology advanced place. There's Mantle which is the main part of the city and then Atlas a floating city above it. He had some good ideas too even if they were dangerous. Getting global communications back up and telling everyone what we were up against.

He upgraded our weapons and we even got to be real Huntsmen, protecting people and doing what we could for the people there.

[His face falls, he definitely wasn't touching his food as he explained.]

but it all went wrong... our enemy was really there causing problems. More than we expected. Innocent people were killed. The General got... scared. He ordered martial law and he intended to raise Atlas higher into the sky to avoid the danger that was coming. It would save Atlas, but abandon Mantle.

He knew we wouldn't accept that so he ordered all of us arrested. We were being chased and we got separated from our friend Oscar.

[Jaune hoped he was okay.]

Ruby and the others managed to find us and get us out of there. The last thing I remember was seeing so many Grimm flying towards the city, including one that looked like a giant flying whale.

Jaune....

[ she thinks of how the world tailspun into absolute chaos in the weeks preceding their fight with Nyx Avatar and how it all seemed so dark even though they had one another to cling to. it sounded like jaune didn't even have that.

yukari pauses then reaches out to cover his hand with her own. it's the only source of comfort she can offer right now. ]

I'm sorry. Watching things fall apart when you're only trying to help is--hard. Dumb question, but...how are you holding up?

[It wasn't even the first time everything fell apart. Given... well everything at Beaco and Pyrrha dying. Maybe he should be used to it by now, but he wasn't. He really wasn't.

Yukari would see Jaune open his mouth as if to say something, stop himself and then shake his head.]

Not great.

[He opted not to lie to Yukari. She'd probably see through it anyway.]

We trusted the general after a while, it looked like he was going to do the right thing. Now we have no idea where Oscar is and we don't know how we're going to keep ourselves safe let alone protect the people of Atlas and Mantle.

Something like that happened to our team, too. The Chairman--Ikutsuki. [ she spits out his name as if it's a curse. ] he gave us advice, helped lead operations...we thought he was a good guy. And then it turned out he'd been using us for his own goals for months. He betrayed and hurt all of us.

After that, we felt lost. Some of us more than others. [ an image of mitsuru, standing by the riverbank in kyoto and curled in on herself in grief, flashes through her mind. ] We weren't sure what to do. Where do you go when you feel the whole world is gonna end, you know? It took a while, but we all realized there wasn't anything we couldn't do if we worked together.

[ she offers jaune a small smile while rubbing his knuckles with her thumb. ] And if your friends sound half as great as you make them sound, I know you'll find a way to help everyone you can.

[Jaune looked surprised. He'd not pried too much into Yukari's own life and didn't want to impose. So Yukari had dealt with something like that before he even met her. It twisted him up inside, but it sounded like Yukari and her friends had gotten through it somehow.

He smiles at her reassurance and squeezes one of her hands.]

Thanks Yukari. We're... going to try. That's all we can do.

[Though trying didn't always mean you got everything you wanted, but it was the responsibility of a huntsman.]

So uh, has everything been okay here?

[ yukari and most of her friends had gotten through. you can't pull off a miracle like sealing away death without giving up something in exchange.

hopefully, jaune's world worked differently than hers. ]

No thanks necessary. I believe in you guys. [ with that, she lets go of his hand to cradle her drink, a milkshake monstrosity. ]

Everything here's been more of the usual. Moon stuff, things attacking all of us at the end of the month. [ she takes a sip of her drink and bashfully smiles around the straw.] ] I, uh, have a house now? You should come by!
