NAME: Yukari Takeba
CANON: Persona 3 Portable, FeMC route
CANON POINT: 2012, about 3 months before Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
AGE: 19
BACKGROUND: Here’s her entry at the Megami Tensei wiki.
PERSONALITY:
For all intents and purposes, Yukari is a regular college student. Her outgoing and friendly personality results in her having a large group of friends. She also has a few part-time jobs to get her through school: modeling and beginning a fledgling acting career on the incredibly popular TV show, Phoenix Ranger Featherman Victory. Her life, on the whole, is pretty good.
However, it’s taken Yukari a long time to reach this stability. Her childhood was nothing but chaotic after the death of her father when she was 6. Her father was the sole dissenting scientist on a team wishing to bring about to summon Nyx and bring about the end of the world, The Fall. While he was able to sabotage their experiment, the results were devastating. Between her mother dating shallow boyfriends as a way to grieve and the constant moving from place to place, she was a very lonely child.
As a result, she distances herself from others. As long as she maintains that distance, other people won’t be able to hurt or abandon her. She makes friends easily, but does her best to keep from showing emotional vulnerability. Her fear of those she loves eventually leaving her has remained despite getting older; her Shadow (a manifestation of the negative feelings Yukari feels about herself) remarks in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, “Who gives a damn about people who won't stay by you? I can do everything on my own!”
And she’ll definitely try doing everything by herself if she can help it. Her independence streak is a mile wide. Three years before the beginning of Persona 3, Yukari chose to live on her own at the age of 13 rather than stay in her mother’s care. She learned to cook and clean just to avoid depending on anyone for help. Her desire for independence is a double-edged sword. On one hand, she’s generally unafraid of anything (other than ghosts, anyway) and is the first to leap into action when the need arises. On the other hand, she can be incredibly reckless. Her tendency to do whatever she wants, combined with her stubborn nature, quick temper, and bluntness, can get her into a lot of trouble. For example, she and other members of S.E.E.S. investigate a sketchy part of town at her insistence. Instead of being afraid of the thugs that begin to harass them, she calls them “scum” and is perfectly happy to try taking them on until an upperclassman shows up to save the crew from themselves.
Despite everything, Yukari enjoys getting to know people. She’s truly devoted to the people who have chosen to stick by her and will do whatever it takes to support them. Want her to beat up the jerk in class who’s messing with you? Got it. Want her to help you learn how to cook? On it. She may tease, but it’s rarely bad-natured. For every sarcastic comment (her loving nickname for her childhood friend Junpei is “Stupei”), there’s an opposite and equal genuine compliment (one of her battle quotes is “Not bad, Junpei!”). She also has a strong sense of justice. Yukari has made a promise to herself to fight for what she believes in, no matter what. When faced with the impending doom of The Fall, she is the first member of S.E.E.S. to suggest fighting back. No god or end of the world scenario is going to tell Yukari Takeba to give up.
Now that she’s a bit older, Yukari is doing her best to share the life lessons she gained while in S.E.E.S. One of the reasons she enjoys her role in Phoenix Featherman Victory so much is that she hopes to give children the desire to punish evil wherever they see it, fight for those they love, and the hope to live their lives as best they can.
She’s coming to Prisma from a much happier mental place than the beginning of Persona 3. The grind of class, shooting the show, homework, sleep, repeat is getting to her a little, but it’s nothing she can’t handle. There’s also the niggling worry that her S.E.E.S. companions are drifting apart, but again, it’s nothing she can’t handle...right? Right.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Persona!: Yukari has the ability to use a Persona, a representation of the personality people adopt as they interact with others. Her Persona, Isis, belongs to the Lovers Arcana and comes with a variety of nifty features like:
